The “good/serious” poetry taught in high school was miserable and I remember a shift where everyone started to hate poetry. In middle school, we learned about haiku and I loved it. Ryan Mecum: I grew up thinking I liked poetry. Can you describe for our readers how you became interested in writing in haiku and why you chose that particular style of poetry? Paige MacGregor: Having published two books, Zombie Haiku and Vampire Haiku, it is clear that you enjoy, or at least are drawn to, writing in haiku. He was kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to answer some of our questions about poetry, writing, and genre. Ryan currently is working on a third book of horror/comedy poetry called Werewolf Haiku, set for release this September. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with the author of Zombie Haiku: Good Poetry for Your…Brains and Vampire Haiku, Ryan Mecum.

When the story starts, he is about to dispatch his two Top Men™ on one more expedition to locate the Second Foundation, who the Mule believes to be mentally manipulating his own manipulated men (try saying that 5 times fast) but weak in physical defences. Instead he’s searching for the mysterious, shadowy Second Foundation. The Mule has consolidated his hold on the volume of space he wrested from the Foundation’s control, but he has delayed any further expansion. The first takes place five years after “The Mule” from Foundation and Empire. Honestly, I found this book to be far more readable and even enjoyable at points!Īs with the previous book, this one is essentially two novellas. That’s not too bad on the Ben Scale of Book Series Completion! My reception of Second Foundation is much more positive than my review of Foundation and Empire, in which I skewered Isaac Asimov’s writing style. Okay, so instead of five years passing between re-read books, I’ve only let a year elapse. Each of us is an outsider in our own way, and The Backstagers speaks to that isolation (both positive and negative) in a way that hits close to home while never becoming overly “dark.” This is a “feel good” comic in the best way anxieties are depicted openly and honestly, and watching the cast cope and find solace is an uplifting experience. Finding the place where one belongs is a key theme to the story, and part of its charm. The main standout in this volume is Beckett, whose struggles with not wanting to lose his sense of agency or safety are poignant and relatable. Jory is a likable point-of-view/new kid character, although I wish he’d gotten a little bit more fleshing out in this volume. Writer James Tynion IV also does a solid job of giving each character their own unique voice. Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast! Words like, Duty, Honor and most of all-Love. Henry John Edgar Thomas Pembrook, Prince of Wessco, just got the motherlode of all responsibility dumped in his regal lap. Some men are born responsible, some men have responsibility thrust upon them. And the bad guys are more than just a little bit silly. The suicidal drift of a society sinking into fatal anomie, on the other hand, could definitely do with more exposition. The incidental activity and the descriptions of day-to-day business and life - is what's most successful (except when it gets too predictable, as in the safe-house Britta, Babak, and Julietta retreat to). For such weighty material, Zeh has opted for a very breezy story - agreeably fast-paced, but certainly thin in way too many regards. It doesn't quite work - that ship largely sailed with the suicidal premise of The Bridge - but at least she tosses it in the mix, and tries to treat it seriously. Zeh's thriller-plot continues to be rather far-fetched - cinematic or made-for-TV over the top simplistic - but offers more than a passing nod to the moral implications of actions and inaction. I think this is a definite five star read and was utterly enamoring.Īnd I look forward to reading more from the author. It is short and and it’s pretty easy to read. I do love historical fiction but this book in particular made an impression on me. It is an incredibly moving story and one that I feel Will Uplift the reader. I loved to see how her talent for embroidery was woven into the story. Koly's journey is a fascinating one and she is easy to care about. More then just vivid, the writing brings to life the Indian Culture, customs, birds and scenery in an utterly resplendent way that is rare to see. You can read the description but this book is really all about the writing which is a tapestry of words and reads like one long poem. This is one of those books that I’m reluctant to talk about. Koly’s story will Resonate with anyone of any age so though this may be classified as young adults or children, I would urge anybody of any age to read the book especially people who loves Historical fiction and in particular Indian fiction. "Immediately I knew that it would be the homeless bird, flying at last to it's home." I embroidered vegetable stalls with purple eggplants and green melons." "I stitched the marketplace stalls heaped with turmeric and cinnamon and cumin and mustard. This book reminds us all of the power of a great teacher and the indispensability of knowledge. The entire tribute is enough to bring tears of joy to one’s eyes especially when Polacco thanks her wonderful Mr. However, with the help of patient teachers, Trisha realizes that she has the power to achieve her goals! The story is wonderfully illustrated in pencil and watercolor by Polacco and the book even foreshadows her career as an artist. Reading was incredibly difficult for Trisha as she saw the words “differently” than the other students but “knowledge is like the bee that made that sweet honey, you have to chase it through the pages of a book!” Trisha certainly has to chase knowledge through a series of losing her grandparents, moving to a new state, and being bullied by a boy named Eric. Although it is a young childrens novel, it is great for comprehension and working on character, themes, setting work, etc. This true story of Patricia Polacco’s struggle to learn to read is a tribute to the teacher that brought words to life for her, Mr. This goes with the short story, Thank You, Mr. A blast from the past-this book is one of the most BEAUTIFUL stories I ever remember reading as a child! |
